The honest truth is this: it’s really hard to write a good blog about a real wedding. You might have experienced the blank-page dread at opening up a new document, trying to do justice to what was a truly beautiful, creatively fulfilling, emotional ‘best day ever’ for a couple you genuinely adored. Or you might have enthusiastically tip-tapped away to recall the magic, only to read it back at the end and realise it doesn’t sound as inspiring as you’d hoped. You’re not alone, and it’s time for solutions to help you tell your sparkly stories. Here I’m going to tell you how to blog about real weddings so people actually care…ready to revolt with me?
Why It’s So Hard To Blog About Real Weddings
I’m going to keep this bit short because the answer to this is quite simple: people are way more interested in reading content if it relates to them. If you’re someone who doesn’t work in the wedding industry (we’re a bit of a special breed), it’s really tedious having to look at someone else’s wedding photos. It’s like being made to sit through a slideshow of their holiday photos or endless shots of their kids with food on their faces; it’s cute for five minutes, but not much longer…and we want to keep people’s attention on our websites for as long as possible.
The trick? Find the spicy secret sauce of giving someone inspiration for their own wedding, while also capturing and keeping their attention and working some SEO magic for your website. Let’s break it down…
Only Ever Blog About A Real Wedding If…
…it ticks one of these boxes, serving one of these purposes.
A) There’s an element of the wedding that falls into your ‘dream’ category and you want to do more of it. For example, you want to work at that venue again, the couple was client-goals and you want to attract more like that, or the vibe and vision of the wedding was right in your creative corner.
Hint: Use THAT specific element as the angle for your blog, focusing your storytelling and SEO on it. Choose a keyword that highlights the thing you want to attract more of.
B) It’s a showcase wedding, one that totally defines your signature style or marks the first time you did something e.g. a destination wedding, a huge floral installation, a luxurious gown or accessory…
C) The wedding has been featured on a wedding blog or as an editorial and you want to show it off. If your wedding is featured somewhere and you’re currently sharing the link to that feature everywhere, you’re missing an opportunity to drive traffic to your own website. I recommend creating your own blog about the feature, in which you can link to the external website. Most wedding blogs don’t mind if you have your own website entry for the wedding, so don’t miss out on the opportunity.
How To Blog About Real Weddings: Tips
When it comes to how to blog about real weddings, remember their purpose. The reason we blog is to improve our ability to be found on Google by future couples and clients, and to bring them to our website. The idea then is that they read the blog they’ve landed on, realise you’re a superstar and they need you for their wedding, and enquire. So as nice as it is to feature our previous couples and give them their fabulous fifteen minutes of fame, doing so always has to serve our future couples too. Here are my tips…
- before you start, always ask yourself: ‘what is it about this blog that will make my dream couples care and pay attention?’
- do I feel excited about the possibility of doing more weddings like this? What do I want to highlight and what do I want to strategically leave out? This is the beauty of being a creative; we can apply it to our writing too!
- consider your keyword carefully. Nobody is going to Google and typing in ‘Sophie & Matt’s Wedding’, so figure out what people will search for if they want to see this specific bit of inspiration.
- try and have fun with it and make your readers feel something. Transport them back to the enchantment of the day, and tell them why you specifically liked something or felt a certain way. We can all see that the floral colour palette was based around Pantone Peach Fuzz, but give some context and make your couples connect with it
- the most important thing to remember when wondering how to blog about real weddings is this: it’s your job to make people want to stick around to read your content, you’re not owed their attention.
Sell your experience, sweep them up in a story, and make them fall head over heels.
